Pledge (contrat d'engagement à respecter les principes de la République)
If you apply for or renew a residence document, you generally must sign a contract committing you to respect the principles of the Republic, although exemptions exist. You must include this contract with your application. Depending on your application route, you submit it to the préfecture, by post, through demarche.numerique.gouv.fr or through the ANEF online portal.
Steps
- Get the contract template from the Ministry of the Interior website; translations are also available there.
- Print and sign the French version for your application or renewal.
- Include the signed contract with your application, using your application route: the préfecture, post, demarche.numerique.gouv.fr or the ANEF online portal.

Key facts
- Your commitment lasts for the entire validity of your residence document.
- If you do not provide the contract or refuse to sign it, the préfecture will treat your application or renewal file as incomplete and refuse to examine it.
- This contract is different from the Republican integration contract (contrat d'intégration républicaine).
- Signing is optional if you are Algerian, whatever residence permit (titre de séjour) you request, or if you are an EU citizen or a member of their family.
- If you are a refugee, have subsidiary protection or are stateless, you must sign, but breaching the contract alone is not enough to refuse or withdraw your residence permit (titre de séjour).
